Responsibilities
:
The Emergency Medical Officer provides immediate and high-quality medical care to patients presenting to the Mother & Childcare Unit's emergency department. The role focuses on the rapid assessment, stabilization, and initial management of obstetric, gynecological, and pediatric emergencies. The EMO works closely with specialist consultants, nurses, and other support staff to ensure timely and effective patient care.Key Responsibilities
Emergency Triage and Assessment: Rapidly assess the condition of emergency patients—both mothers and children—to determine the severity of their illness or injury and prioritize care. This includes assessing obstetric emergencies like preeclampsia, postpartum hemorrhage, or eclampsia, as well as pediatric emergencies like severe fever, respiratory distress, or dehydration.
Initial Medical Management: Administer life-saving treatments, including but not limited to resuscitation, airway management, fluid resuscitation, and administering emergency medications. For mothers, this may involve initial management of labor complications. For children, it involves addressing critical pediatric conditions.
Patient Stabilization and Referral: Stabilize critically ill patients and prepare them for admission to the appropriate ward (e.g., ICU, NICU, or maternity ward) or for transfer to a specialized hospital if needed.
Medical Procedures: Perform minor emergency procedures under supervision, such as suturing of minor lacerations, catheterization, or providing initial care for newborn resuscitation.
Documentation: Maintain accurate and detailed medical records for all emergency patients, including their medical history, presenting complaints, vital signs, and the treatment provided.
Collaboration: Work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team, communicating clearly with nurses, lab technicians, and specialist consultants (like a Gynecologist or Pediatrician) to ensure a coordinated and seamless flow of care.
Communication: Provide clear and empathetic communication to patients and their families regarding their condition, treatment plans, and what to expect.
