  • Responsibilities : For a Knit Garment Factory, the Head of R&D plays a highly specialized and crucial role. They are not just focused on general product development but specifically on textile innovation, knitting technologies, fabric properties, and fashion trends relevant to knitted apparel. The Head of R&D for a Knit Garment Factory is a visionary leader responsible for driving innovation in knit fabric and garment development. This role focuses on researching new yarns, knitting techniques, fabric finishes, and garment constructions to create cutting-edge, marketable, and sustainable knitwear. They will lead a team of textile engineers, knitwear designers, and technicians, fostering a culture of creativity, technical excellence, and efficiency. The R&D Head ensures that the factory's knitwear offerings are competitive, meet quality standards, align with fashion trends, and cater to evolving customer demands and sustainability goals.HOD (R&D) JOB RESPONSIBILITY:.  Knitwear Innovation Strategy:
  • Develop and execute a comprehensive R&D strategy specifically for knit fabrics and garments, aligned with the company's business objectives, brand identity, and market positioning.
  • Identify and evaluate emerging trends in knitwear fashion, yarn technology, knitting machinery, and sustainable textile practices.
  • Propose and lead initiatives for new product categories, fabric innovations, and advanced garment constructions.
  • ·           Overseeing prototype creation, testing, and validation processes.·         Coordinating with cross-functional teams such as production, marketing, and sourcing.·          Exploring and evaluating new materials, dyes, finishing techniques, and manufacturing processes.·          Collaborating with suppliers and technology providers for innovation.·           Managing budgets for R&D projects.  Fabric & Yarn Development:
  • Oversee the research and selection of new and innovative yarns (natural, synthetic, recycled, blended) that offer unique aesthetics, performance characteristics (e.g., moisture-wicking, anti-bacterial, UV protection), and cost-effectiveness.
  • Lead the development of novel knit structures, patterns, and textures (e.g., jacquards, intarsia, plating, structured knits) to create distinctive fabrics.
  • Collaborate with yarn suppliers and knitting machine manufacturers to explore new material capabilities and machine functionalities.
  • Supervise the development of sustainable knit fabrics, focusing on eco-friendly fibers, dyeing processes, and waste reduction.
  •  Garment Construction & Technical Development:
  • Direct the development of new garment silhouettes, fits, and technical constructions tailored for knitted apparel.
  • Work closely with the design and merchandising teams to translate design concepts into technically feasible and production-ready knitwear.
  • Oversee the creation of prototypes, samples, and technical specifications for all new knit garment developments.
  • Implement and optimize knitting parameters, machine settings, and finishing processes (e.g., compacting, brushing, softening) to achieve desired fabric hand-feel, shrinkage, and quality.
  •  Process Optimization & Efficiency:
  • Identify opportunities to improve existing knitting, dyeing, finishing, and garmenting processes for enhanced efficiency, cost reduction, and quality improvement.
  • Explore and implement automation and new technologies within the knitting and garment assembly lines.
  • Develop and maintain a comprehensive technical library of knit fabric constructions, yarn properties, and process parameters.
  • Quality Assurance & Testing:
  • Establish rigorous testing protocols for new knit fabrics and garments, covering aspects like shrinkage, pilling, colorfastness, strength, and durability.
  • Ensure all R&D outputs meet international quality standards (e.g., AATCC, ASTM, ISO) and buyer-specific requirements.
  • Work with the Quality Control department to resolve any R&D-related quality issues during production.
  •  Team Leadership & Collaboration:
  • Lead, mentor, and develop a team of knitwear designers, textile engineers, knitting technicians, and lab personnel.
  • Foster strong collaboration with Merchandising, Design, Production, Sourcing, and Quality departments to ensure smooth handoff from R&D to mass production.
  • Train production teams on new technologies, knitting techniques, and fabric properties introduced by R&D.
  • Market Research & Competitive Analysis:
  • Conduct in-depth market research on knitwear trends, competitor collections, and consumer preferences.
  • Attend industry trade shows, seminars, and workshops to stay updated on the latest innovations in knit textile technology.
  • Provide insights and recommendations to senior management on market opportunities and technological advancements.
  • Intellectual Property & Compliance:
  • Safeguard the company's intellectual property related to knit fabric constructions, designs, and process innovations.
  • Ensure all R&D activities comply with relevant industry regulations, environmental standards (e.g., OEKO-TEX, GOTS, ZDHC etc), and social compliance norms.
